Newly Released: Daring Place

I loved writing this story! I hope you love reading it! 😀

Half the key to his escape beckons from cold solitude, the other half from hottest battle…

Coehlin, a merchant-mage and sometime scholar, pursues the ordinary goal of recovering his fortune after the wars—with snatches of arcane reading on the side.

All that changes when he follows his curiosity to a haunted circle of ground. Wielding philosophy and magic where he shouldn’t, Coehlin metamorphoses into a monster trapped in a cursed maze.

As he labors to walk on a pair of bull’s legs and see through bull’s eyes, the maze lures others into its deepening evil. Coehlin must not only devise his own escape, but fight to protect these innocent wayfarers from death.

And when the troll-watch musters to slay the monster in the maze, Coehlin must reach beyond his daily survival. Unless he learns to embrace the serenity hidden beneath his frantic striving and restless scholarship, he and his newest charge will perish in the coming assault.

“To Haunt the Daring Place” is a story of my troll-infested North-lands. If you enjoy engaging characters, inventive plots, and intricate world-building, then you’ll love this twist on a classic myth.

Read “To Haunt the Daring Place” to win living freedom from dead knowledge today!

Cover Reveal: Daring Place

“To Haunt the Daring Place” will release in just a few weeks!

I love the cover! It was done by a new designer I discovered six months ago. Doesn’t he do divine work? James at GoOnWrite.com. You’ll be seeing more covers from him going forward, I promise.

New Stories en Route

I have a bunch of new titles releasing this year, and I’m excited about it.

Three of them come from the batch of short stories I’ve written during the pandemic. Another three were originally published in the collection Tales of Old Giralliya. But while some readers prefer to obtain their short stories in bundles, others decidedly do not: they want them one by one, à la carte. I want to to make both sorts happy, so this trio will now appear as three singles.

Yet another three stories appeared on my blog many years ago and are now buried where no one can find them. I never did get them released as ebooks and paperbacks. That will happen this year. Since I wrote them so long ago, I’ll give each a thorough revision. I want them the best they can be.

All together, that’s nine stories! Here’s what’s in store, month by month:

February “To Haunt the Daring Place”

March “Titan Invictus”

April “Read-Only Ash”

May “Right, Wrong, and Amazing”

June “Eurydice Otherwise”

July “Blood Falchion”

August “The Kite Climber”

September “Faerie Tithe”

October “The Smith and the Hermit”

I’ll be posting here and sending an email to my newsletter subscribers to announce each release! 😀

Which Serial Next?

I’ve been thinking about this for a while. Which of my stories should I serialize now?

Back when I first started posting The Tally Master on Wednesdays, scene by scene, I imagined myself choosing another of my novels after it, perhaps Caught in Amber. But as The Tally Master unspooled week by week, I began to think again. You see, I hadn’t ever counted the number of scenes in Tally.

I did a rough estimate then and discovered that there were over 100. It was going to take almost two years to post the entire novel! Maybe I should choose one of my short stories next. “Perilous Chance” might be good. How many scenes were in that?

Fifteen. Fifteen scenes seems too short. Plus I like to reserve my shorts as special bonuses that my newsletter subscribers receive at times.

Clearly I should choose a novella.

I’d almost settled on Hunting Wild, when I noticed something about The Tally Master serial. The number of readers reading it was dropping, while the number of purchases of the book was rising. This was actually a very nice thing to see: readers were abandoning the serial because they wanted to read the story faster than it was appearing on my blog. Yay!

The question was: would fresh readers jump aboard the serial? The chapters remained up, starting with chapter one, so they could.

But they didn’t. By the time I reached the halfway mark, all the serial readers had purchased either the ebook or the paperback. Except there was a decent chance I had a few stealth serial readers. Not every page view on my website shows up on my dashboard. If I stopped posting scenes, I might cut off the story in the middle for a few hidden readers, and I’d never want to do that to anybody!

Plus there was always the possibility that some unknown future reader would stumble across my website five years from now and start reading. They’d be so disappointed if the story came to an abrupt halt in the middle. I had to keep going.

So I posted week after week, but never did see actual evidence of readers. Probably there were a few. If any of you stealth readers are reading this post…I did it for you! All the way to the end! 😀

I probably will do another serial at some point. It was really cool to watch as readers leapt from the serial to the ebook or the paperback! But for now I’m taking a break from serializing anything. The Wednesday Serial is officially on hiatus.

If you missed The Tally Master, here’s the beginning of the serial: The Tally Master, Chapter 1 (scene 1). Check it out!

Conclusion of the Serial

Wow! I can hardly believe I’ve blogged the last scene of The Tally Master.

I started in September 2019, over two years ago. At the time I knew the novel had 23 chapters, but I’d never counted the scenes. If I posted one scene every week, how many weeks would it take? I didn’t really know. Some chapters had three scenes, some had six, but the total for the book was an unknown quantity.

Well, now I know, and you do, too!

107 scenes. Wow!

So here we are at the end. Gael and Keir have a fix on the lodestone they’ve been seeking. Now all they have to do is go get it!

Of course, you know there will be an adventure in the getting. That adventure is told in Sovereign Night.

I urge you to read it! (For more about Sovereign Night, see this book page on my website.)

But…what should I do with this space on my blog?

I’d imagined serializing some of my short stories. Then I changed my mind and decided on one of the novellas. And now I’m just not sure. What should I do?

I’m going to think about it a while longer, and then I’ll let you know. Of course, I’d welcome your input. What would you like to see here? Drop me a line in the comments or send me an email. I’d love to hear from you!
